“I first came along 4 years ago because this group is the local, Chichester manifestation of a much bigger national idea; I was attracted by the social liberalism and economic centrism that the party represents and, frankly, by an aversion to the priorities and methods of the other parties. I feel strongly about internationalism and human rights and the environment and equality of opportunity and it seemed and seems to me that this party is my natural home. I have learned that it is difficult to translate these high and slightly abstract ideals into practical local politics; I think that’s our ongoing challenge – we want more members, so we need both to represent progressive opinions and also give people things to do that interest them and are clearly in line with their beliefs.”
Matthew Leeming, stepping down after 3 years as Chairman of Chichester Lib Dems, spoke at the AGM. He said:
