The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full.
Our local Councils are currently dominated by the Conservative Party. Too often they make decisions behind closed doors, by a leader and Cabinet. They fail to involve Councillors in the full decision-making process, which can mean ‘backbench’ councillors are excluded from decisions. This is not good for the democratic process. We want to see more participation by members of the public in Council meetings. This will result in more open debate on important topics that affect local residents.
SIX TO FIX: Six improvements that we will make:
Demand better for our communities:
We will ensure you have a real voice on the Council.
Demand better housing:
Preserve green spaces but provide truly affordable housing.
Demand better transport:
Create a Citizens’ Assembly for the A27. Create a proper, integrated, sustainable transport infrastructure.
Demand better for business:
Support local businesses. Provide job opportunities locally for graduates and apprentices.
Demand better for the environment:
The environment is a priority. We are committed to a greener, more environmentally friendly community.
Demand better for the people of Chichester:
We want people to live and work safely and comfortably throughout the whole district. We also support cultural, recreational and sporting initiatives and encourage tourism to the region.
