We will support parish councils and neighbourhood plans. We will encourage residents to become involved in local democracy. Our councillors are committed to being easily accessible and open to new ideas and concerns.

The general public should have the ability to raise matters of concern, even if they are not on the agenda. This is because we believe that everyone should have a real voice on the Council. We will fight to ensure that the Council listens to you.

Liberal Democrats will:

• empower communities, as their members best understand the issues they face;
• fund more community police officers;
• return real power to communities;
• ensure the Council is accountable to the general public;
• create a Council that responds to everyone (no excuses);
• create a listening Council that will work with the community;
• work more closely with Parish and County Councils, and other local authorities;

In Practice

The Liberal Democrats have already made a difference.  Clare Apel (Chair of the District Council Scrutiny Committee) has challenged the way Council consultations are being run.  Too many people have found these poorly publicised and difficult to access.  A full review is now being undertaken.
